REQUEST
Re: REQUEST Sorry about that, hope this is better. part 1/2
He has narcolepsy, which typically appears when he’s eating causing those around him who don’t know this to think he died in his food. When he comes to, he typically doesn’t remember falling asleep and goes right back to whatever he was doing like nothing happened.
Ace has a habit of not paying for his food. His dine and dash routine started when he was a kid along with Luffy and their other adopted brother, Sabo. They would go to a restaurant in disguise, order a bunch of food and then leave without paying for it and this habit is something he has kept in his adulthood.
He learned his manners from Makino, a bar maid and ‘aunt type figure’ from his home island. He wanted to learn them so he could thank Shanks personally for saving Luffy’s life and thus giving him a younger brother to take care of. He kept his manners even in adulthood. When Luffy accidentally knocked him and Smoker through a family’s home while in Alabasta, he apologized for interrupting their meal and putting a hole in their wall.
Ace is dependable and strong. He used to be captain of the Spade pirates and during this time he was actually extended an invitation by the world government to become one of the Shichibukai or warlords of the sea. He declined this invitation because he has no desire to have anything to do with them. He became a pirate for the freedom it offered and a chance to escape the so-called ‘justice’ of the world he lived in. After all, the reason Ace was put to death after being sent to Impel Down had to do more so with being the son of Roger then for being a pirate. For years the only thing keeping him safe was the fact he was a Whitebeard pirate. But in the end, the government was more interested in seeing him dead then worrying about what the repercussions of doing so would cause.
For a pirate, he is fair and honest and always repays his debts. He even saved a crew of marines at the G-2 base even though it blew his cover and he almost got captured because of it. He doesn’t hurt innocent people and should it happen on accident he will accept the punishment afforded by those he wronged. He even went so far as to let a town toss him in the river for attacking a man he thought to be Blackbeard. He would have drowned if a milkmaid hadn’t taken pity on him and saved his life.
He can be loyal almost to a fault. When Teach killed Thatch, Ace set out for revenge because he believed Teach to be his responsibility. This was all because he was the Second Division Commander, a title he earned fair and square and pretty soon after he joined the crew as well, and the man had been part of his unit. The fact that Ace hadn’t been part of their crew long didn’t cross his mind. And, even though the others had known the man a lot longer then he had he still felt it was his responsibility to see it through to the end.
When he was with his crew before he left on his revenge quest, and even when he was in Alabasta with Luffy for a short time, he can be seen laughing and joking around and having a good time. His smile is almost as big as his brothers and he loves Luffy like he’s the next best thing to sliced cheese. Ace knows Luffy can be a handful so therefore he apologized to his brother’s crew and thanked them profusely for looking after him. He worries about him, but knowing he’s in good hands with his crew he can leave his brother with a clear conscience knowing he will achieve his dreams.
Ace is rash and has little concern for his own safety. He has been seen sneaking aboard Buggy the Clown’s ship and joining in their party without a care in the world. He just invited himself and started eating before the other even noticed he was there. By the end of it they were friends and when Ace was in Impel Down, Buggy was, although reluctant, part of his rescue party.
Ace can be stubborn and childish when he wants to be. Back when he was a still a Captain of his own crew he was set on being the strongest around. He wanted to challenge Whitebeard because in his opinion he was the big dog around and by defeating him he would prove he was worth something. He found himself in a confrontation with Jinbe and the two were locked in a massive fight that lasted 5 days and ended pretty much in a draw. Whitebeard appeared soon after and hastened to challenge the captain even though he was exhausted and injured.
Of course, he lost and when Whitebeard held out his hand in friendship and asked Ace to be his ‘son’ the boy had adamantly refused. The great pirate even adopted Ace’s crew into his own but the boy wouldn’t budge. He was much too stubborn to accept the man as his ‘father’ because to him, a father was a worthless piece of skin and he didn’t think he needed something like that. As a way of retaliation, Ace tried hundreds of times to kill Whitebeard while he was on his ship but each attempt was met with swift and often painful defeat. Eventually Thatch and Marco explained to him what having a father like Whitebeard really meant and after that Ace was all for it.
Even though Ace had fought Jinbe in the past, when the other was sharing a cell with him in Impel Down, Ace begged him to look after Luffy should he ever get the chance. He knew the fishman was honest and would do as he asked. By doing this, in his mind he was ensuring that his beloved little brother would still have someone watching over him when he himself could not.
He can be rather moody when certain issues are involved. He spent the majority of his life questioning whether or not his life held any meaning. Most of this stems from his late father, the king of pirates, Gol D. Roger. Ace doesn’t accept the man as his father and has openly stated that only Whitebeard will ever be the man he calls father. Ace battled with this particular demon all of his life from when he was a child up to his death. He would go into town on his home island and listen to the men talking trash about his ‘demon’ of a father and how if there were any ‘demon’ spawn they should all be wiped out. It was comments like this that always seemed to incite in a rage within him that caused him to lash out. He would beat grown men sometimes within an inch of their life and afterwards show little to no remorse.
He never really cared whether he lived or died and this is most likely the reason behind his lack of self-preservation. He didn’t think anyone would ever really miss him if he died all because of his father. It wasn’t until Luffy came along that he found the desire to live. He said as he lay dying in his brother’s arms that his one regret was not being able to see him achieve his dream of being the pirate king and that he wouldn’t be able to look out for him anymore.
The issue of his worth is also evident in the way that he behaves around others versus when he is alone. He is fun loving and happy around his family, but it’s only temporary. His deep seated sense of worthlessness can often hang over him like a black cloud threatening to cover him. It’s no wonder he has issues, the government wants him dead all because of who his father was. He has no love or respect for a government that would kill infants and children based on their parentage and not their own actions. This is why he chose piracy, at least this way he has a chance to do some good.
This also ties into his sense of justice and freedom. Ace wants the world to be a better place where people don’t have to die because of their parent’s sins. But the people in charge are greedy and selfish and care little for those they govern. They seek to wipe out any and all possible ‘bad eggs’ before they have a chance to mature and make a decision for themselves on how they will behave.
This was evident to him, most notably, when he was a child. The Tenryuubito, a group of elite world nobles who saw everyone beneath them as trash and expendable, killed Sabo, his other adopted brother because he was ‘in the way’ of their ship. No other reason, just because he was there. It didn’t matter to them that he was a child. Another example would be how the nobles of his home island burned down the poor side of town because they found it ‘unsightly’. They didn’t care about the people living there and thought it better to just kill them all. To do away with the trash as it were. Ace and Luffy almost died in that fire. If it hadn’t been for Dadan coming to save his life, Ace might have died then.
He can be quick to anger. Easily provoked, his enemy only has to insult someone he cares about deeply and Ace will be ready for a fight. He will not tolerate anyone talking bad about someone he loves and he will not stop until the offender is appropriately black and blue. This is proved to be a fatal flaw because while Luffy had managed to rescue him from the execution platform in Impel Down, had Admiral Akainu not been there to taunt Ace he could have very well managed to escape with his life intact. But as it was, the man did insult Whitebeard and Ace couldn’t let it go. He attacked the Admiral and in the end he died as the other pierced his chest while he himself was defending his little brothers life.
Sadly it wasn’t until then, as he lay dying, that he realized perhaps his life did have meaning after all. That maybe there really was someone out there who loved him. He thanked Luffy for loving him and giving him a reason to want to live. When it was all said and done, Ace died with a smile on his face content with his life.
part 2/2
It was dark, he was covered in so many wounds, some of them festering with infection and he knew he had to smell pretty damn bad. After all…they didn’t exactly free him and allow him to use the bathroom or anything. But in spite of all of this the only pain Ace felt was that within his heart.
He had been locked in this cell for weeks enduring horrors that would make grown men wet their pants and seek mental counseling over with barely the blink of an eye because in all honesty, how does one break something that was never whole to begin with?
He shifted lightly, trying to ease the pain in his shoulders but all it did was create pain somewhere else. He wished his mind would just quiet down, maybe then he could possibly just die in peace without having to worry about everyone that was undoubtedly going to try and save him. Maybe if he died they would just stop? No…Gramps had said as much. His father, Whitebeard, was coming and not even him dying now would stop the inevitable clash about to happen.
The thought brought tears to his eyes again. He wasn’t worth rescue. He shouldn’t even be alive so why were they trying to save him? He just couldn’t wrap his head around it. The last thing Ace wanted was someone to die because of him. He didn’t want any of his brothers on the crew or Whitebeard or anyone else to get hurt or possibly even die because he was stupid and made a huge mistake.
“So stupid…” Ace mumbled to himself as he cried silently. “So incredibly stupid.” His cries soon became soft sobs he couldn’t contain as the hurt and guilt of causing his loved ones pain welled up within him. “I should have listened…to you.” He murmured. Whitebeard and Marco had all but begged him not to go after Teach. The old man had been willing to let the slight slide because he was afraid Ace’s hot headedness would get the better of him. And it did.
He didn’t regret going after Blackbeard. It went against himself to let something like that go because his family was important to him and Teach had killed a member of his family. But all the same, Ace wished he had been smarter about it. If he had thought things through and not rushed in headfirst it might have turned out different in the end. Now he would never know, all he could do was sit in his cell and wait for the end. He just hoped Luffy stayed away. He would never forgive himself if his little brother got hurt all because of him. This thought brought him back full circle. “Wouldn’t have been better…if I had never been born?”
